Testing conducted by Apple in October 2020 using pre-production Mac mini systems with Apple M1 chip, and production 3.6GHz quad-core Intel Core i3–based Mac mini systems with Intel UHD Graphics 630, all configured with 16GB of RAM and 2TB SSD. Tested with Shadow of the Tomb Raider 1.0.1 using the built-in benchmark, at 1920x1080 resolution. The 2019 Mac Pros have arrived and our benchmarking has started! For this first round of benchmarking, we used NodeJS and Wikipedia's iOS build. Check out the results we got when the new Pro was put up against its earlier counterparts. A Mac running OS X Yosemite (10.10) or higher (although we recommend the latest stable version). A Mac which can run Xamarin iOS SDK; A Mac which can run Apple's Xcode(7+) IDE and iOS SDK; If it has to be machine which will be used as a Xamarin Mac Agent (picture below) only I want it to be cheapest possible solution.
3rd-generation Mac Mini (2014) 2nd-generation MacBook Air (2017) 5th-generation iMac (2015) When you're looking for a Mac or MacBook to purchase, make sure it runs the latest version of macOS. Xcode versions you can run are tied to macOS versions your hardware runs, and iOS versions you can build for are tied to Xcode versions.
The 2019 Mac Pros have arrived and our benchmarking has started! Our customers use different languages and frameworks to develop across the Apple ecosystem. At build time, we've found these frameworks draw on compile resources differently. At MacStadium, we've been working hard to create standardized benchmarks to provide developers with the data they need to pick the right hardware to support their work.
Out-of-the-Box Rack Mounts
Mac games shop. We're no strangers to rackingmacs. We're also one of the first in the world to get our hands on the new rack-mount 2019 Mac Pro. Even though we've been running benchmarks and testing them out, the MacStadium engineering team is still evaluating the hardware and integration specifics for both the rack-mounted and stand-alone versions to determine the best configurations for our customers. Measuring Build Performance
For this first round of benchmarking, we used NodeJS and Wikipedia's iOS build. Check out the links to the repos we used below if you want to try them out for yourself.
Preliminary Take-Aways:
- 2019 Mac Pro is up to 2x faster than the next fastest machine (2013 Pro) for NodeJS-24 Thread builds
- 2019 Mac Pro is also fastest for NodeJS-4 Thread builds, but it's neck-and-neck with 2018 minis
- 2013 Mac Pro is still very competitive for some builds (faster than minis for NodeJS-24, ~20% slower than minis on the Xcode build
- The 2018 Mac mini provides a lot of value for developers using Xcode builds but struggles at higher thread-count Node builds
